TOOLS for (SOCIAL CHANGE and) DEVELOPMENT at BROWN UNIVERSITY

“Tools for Development” is a Brown University undergraduate course for students interested in learning the skills to implement innovative social change initiatives around the globe (with a primary emphasis on developing countries). This course gives students a platform to question and start defining their roles in the field of development, through skills building, case studies, conversations with development practitioners, and reflection exercises.

As the primary instructor for the course, I mentored 12 students and helped them develop, refine, and eventually implement their social change initiatives. Student projects were diverse, covering many topics, including: helping improve the business model of a fair trade wedding dress company, improving refugee processing in Miami, and enhancing women's economic wellbeing in Yemen.

I co-developed the course syllabus, facilitated bi-weekly course meetings/discussions, graded all assignments, guided project proposal development, and connected students to relevant partner organizations.
