BANGALORE URBAN CITIZENSHIP INDEX
The Brown-Janaagraha Citizenship Index is a survey of more than 4000 households in Bangalore and seeks to understand the quality of citizenship in urban India.
For this survey, I evaluated and synthesized existing literature on citizenship and political engagement in urban India. I collaborated with faculty from Brown University, staff from Janaagraha (the NGO partner in Bangalore) and scholars from the Institute for Social and Economic Change in Bangalore to design the initial survey instrument. I also assisted in pre-testing the survey instrument with 100+ respondents in Bangalore.
Research findings from the survey pre-test were synthezied and the results were applied to improve and refine the final survey. The findings of this survey have been used by Janaagraha to inform urban policymakers on the political engagement practices of citizens and the current state of urban services in the city.
